Scalloped potatoes are a classic comfort food dish that’s creamy, cheesy, and oh-so-delicious. Here’s a recipe for the best scalloped potatoes:
Ingredients:
- 2 lbs (about 1 kg) Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 cups shredded cheese (such as sharp cheddar, Gruyere, or a combination)
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme (or 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and sauté until softened and fragrant, about 2-3 minutes.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onion and garlic mixture, stirring constantly, and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes to make a roux.
- Gradually whisk in the whole milk and heavy cream, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Cook until the mixture thickens and comes to a simmer, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in 1 1/2 cups of shredded cheese until melted and smooth. Remove the skillet from the heat and season the sauce with dried thyme, salt, pepper, and ground nutmeg.
- Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in an even layer on the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes, spreading it evenly.
- Repeat with the remaining sliced potatoes and cheese sauce, creating another layer.
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
- Remove the foil and sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheese over the top of the scalloped potatoes. Return the dish to the oven and bake, uncovered, for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the top is golden brown.
- Remove the scalloped potatoes from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley, if desired.
Serve these creamy and cheesy scalloped potatoes as a delicious side dish for any occasion, from holiday dinners to weeknight meals. Enjoy!
